The American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) is seeking young leaders from Indonesia to participate in a multi-phased Legislative Fellows Program (LFP) in the United States and Indonesia.
Legislative Fellows Program applicants must be:
- University Graduates
- Age 25-35
- Fluent in English
- Professional engaged in politics, elections, policy-making, civic education or grassroots advocacy
- Possess demonstrated leadership abilities and a commitment to public service
- Committed/ able to organizing a program in applicant’s country for American mentor that includes joint outreach and capacity building activities
About the ACYPL Legislative Fellows Program
The Legislative Fellows Program will include selected participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States.
International Fellows will spend 5 weeks in the United States, which will include:
4 DAY Orientation in Washington, DC
4 WEEK Professional Mentoring and Internship in a pre-determined US state
2 DAY Strategic Planning and Evaluation Session in Washington, DC
2 WEEK Hosting American Mentor in Fellow’s community

First group of 9 International fellows travel to US
Professional internships in Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Washington state
June - August 2010
American participants travel to host country for 10-14 day in-country program
October - November 2010
Second group of 9 International fellows travel to US
Professional internships in Illinois, Ohio and Mississippi
January - May 2011
American participants travel to host country for a 10-14 day in-country program
Legislative Fellows Program Goals
To exploring common concerns and challenges, sharing expertise, and develop capacity to encourage and enhance citizen participation and responsibility with an eye toward promoting good government.
Legislative Fellows Program Objectives
· Provide opportunities to interact with US Congressional members, federal government officials, political and policy experts, and national political party representatives to enhance understanding of the role and processes of the American national government.
· Provide hands-on mentoring opportunities in state legislative, mayoral, and city council offices throughout the United States to gain understanding of day-to-day state and local government processes, good government practices, and local community involvement.
· Provide extensive interactions with state and local political parties and campaigns to gain understanding of the American political and election processes, including campaign strategy making, grassroots organizing, voter registration, communication, get-out-the-vote and fundraising.
· Provide hands-on volunteer opportunities at local schools and diverse community organizations to gain knowledge about the challenges facing Americans and the power of citizen engagement, volunteerism, and advocacy to address the needs of diverse communities.
· Provide opportunities to learn about the role media plays in American politics, civil dialogue and debate, by meeting with and shadowing traditional and non-traditional journalists.
· Provide access to communication experts to explore the power of technology and the Internet to bring together diverse groups and voices to promote and strengthen grassroots organizing, citizen activism, and open dialogue toward addressing shared challenges and/or common goals.
· Provide opportunities for informal interactions, cultural outings, outdoor activities, and home hospitality with “everyday” Americans to engage in open conversations about common concerns and shared dreams to gain insight and knowledge about each other and establish professional relationships and personal friendships.
· Provide opportunities for American and international participants to continue their engagement by participating in joint outreach activities, engaging the local media, and on-site consultancies and presentations to wider audiences.

ACYPL will send American delegations to:
Australia, Brazil, China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ghana, Israel, Japan, Nepal, Palestinian Territories, Russia, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, Vietnam
